Shubman Gill: The first step towards India's next ODI captain
In the first ODI match played between India and England in Nagpur, Shubman Gill made a great start to his new journey as vice-captain. Gill played a brilliant innings of 87 runs in 96 balls and became the 'Player of the Match'. Thanks to his innings, India achieved England's target of 249 runs in just 38.4 overs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Rohit Sharma's trust in Gill
After the match, Gill revealed that captain Rohit Sharma has advised him to express his views openly on the field. Gill said, "Not much has changed in batting, but while fielding I want to understand what Rohit Bhaiya is thinking and want to give my inputs. He told me that if you have to say something, tell me without hesitation."
Important partnership of Gill and Iyer
India's innings did not start well, as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma were dismissed early. In such a difficult time, Gill handled the innings. Shreyas Iyer's (59 runs, 36 balls) aggressive style put pressure on the England bowlers, which also gave Gill a chance to play his game.
Gill said, "When the score was 19/2, my thinking was to stay positive. The fast bowlers were getting some help, but my intention was to play good cricketing shots. Iyer's way of playing also helped me, because his attacking style put the opposition team under pressure."
Gill's favorite shot and analysis of the pitch
Gill hit 14 fours during his innings, but he got the most happiness from the pull shot played over midwicket. He said, "When I was batting on 70, the pull shot towards midwicket was my favorite. The pitch was a bit double-paced and the spinners kept variations in their speed. So I decided to try to play square of the wicket without using too much force."
Strong performance by Ravindra Jadeja and Harshit Rana
Earlier, India's bowlers restricted England to 248 runs. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (9 overs, 3/26) and debutant Harshit Rana's sharp bowling scattered England's batting. Especially the wickets of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook in Rana's fourth over broke the back of England's innings. Although England captain Jos Buttler (52) and Jack Bethell (51) struggled, they could not take the team beyond a respectable score.
Gill's new role and India's next step
Shubman Gill has been made the vice-captain of India in the ODI format and he will also be seen in this role in the upcoming Champions Trophy. His new responsibility takes him closer to becoming India's full-time ODI captain in the future. India have taken a 1-0 lead in the series against England, and now all eyes will be on the next match, where the team will try to maintain this momentum.
