Massive Blow to South Africa: Gerald Coetzee Ruled Out of Tri-Series and Champions Trophy 2025

South Africa has suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan and the Champions Trophy 2025. Star speedster Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out due to a groin injury and will not be considered for selection for the prestigious ICC event.

Gerald Coetzee’s Injury Woes Continue

Coetzee, who was recently named in South Africa’s squad for the ODI tri-series, experienced tightness in his groin while completing his 10-over spell during a training session at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria. After a thorough assessment, Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) medical team determined that the increased bowling workload in 50-over matches could put him at significant risk of further injury.

This is another injury setback for the 24-year-old, who had recently recovered from a left hamstring strain that limited his participation in the SA20 league, where he played only one match for the Joburg Super Kings. He had also missed the second Test against Sri Lanka and the series against Pakistan due to the same groin issue.

Impact on South Africa’s Champions Trophy Plans

Coetzee was expected to replace Anrich Nortje, who is also sidelined due to injury, in the Champions Trophy squad. His absence leaves a major void in South Africa’s pace attack, as he was the team’s highest wicket-taker in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, picking up 20 wickets in eight matches.

South Africa will soon announce a replacement for Coetzee ahead of the Champions Trophy, which is set to begin on February 19. The Proteas will kick off their campaign on February 21 against Afghanistan at the National Stadium in Karachi.

South Africa’s Upcoming Fixtures

Before the Champions Trophy, South Africa will participate in a tri-nation series featuring Pakistan and New Zealand. Their first match is scheduled against New Zealand on February 10. The Proteas have already announced a 12-member squad for the opening game of the series.
