England’s Batting Collapse Hands India a 4-Wicket Win in First ODI
England suffered a disappointing four-wicket defeat against India in the first ODI in Nagpur on February 6. Despite a strong start, a middle-order collapse cost them dearly, allowing India to chase down the target comfortably with 68 balls to spare.
England’s Blazing Start Turns Into a Collapse
England got off to a flying start, with Phil Salt (43 off 26) and Ben Duckett (32 off 29) putting on a rapid 75-run partnership within the first nine overs. Salt was particularly aggressive, smashing 26 runs in a single over off Harshit Rana. However, their momentum was abruptly halted when they lost three wickets for just two runs in the span of eight balls. A mix-up between Salt and Duckett led to a comical run-out, triggering a collapse.
Despite a fighting 52 off 67 balls from skipper Jos Buttler and a resilient 51 off 64 balls from Jacob Bethell, England failed to capitalize on their start. Once Buttler departed, England crumbled from 170-4 to 248 all out.
India’s Chase: Gill, Iyer, and Axar Shine
Chasing 249, India never looked in serious trouble, even in the absence of Virat Kohli, who missed the game due to a knee injury. Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a classy 87, while Shreyas Iyer’s blistering 59 off 36 balls provided the necessary acceleration. Axar Patel’s composed 52 off 47 balls ensured India got over the line despite a few late hiccups.
Buttler Admits England Fell Short
Speaking after the match, a disappointed Jos Buttler admitted that England needed 40-50 more runs to be competitive, considering how the pitch played towards the end.
"We got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay but lost wickets at crucial moments. Another 40-50 runs could have been handy with the way the wicket played later. The game was in the balance at one point, but credit to Shreyas Iyer for building that crucial partnership. We need to play better for longer periods," Buttler stated.
